Meet Kai

My own health journey + coaching philosophy

The idea of fitness and health weren't always a familiar arena for me. Despite being pretty active growing up (I was fortunate enough to have parents who encouraged me to try and play a bunch of different sports throughout my life) I sort of just "did sports". I wasn't a high school athlete making an effort to get picked up for college teams and eventually was spending more time running around town with my friends or sitting behind a computer than doing anything really active and was just "the skinny kid".

This didn't really change in college and despite spending my fair share of time partying and not eating all that great (I think I recall seeing the a vegetable some point over those years...) I never broke out of that skinny guy look. None of this did anything great for my confidence or sense of feeling confident in my own skin and who I was.

Flash forward to being a young adult out in the world and doing a routine annual health exam. Nothing threatening but I remember getting the report back and just seeing far too many things really close to the "high" end of the risk scale and being told that I was actually close to an unhealthy weight ... but I was so thin, how was that possible?!

This is when I started to really grasp the idea that the way we look may not translate to how healthy we are. So I dove into reading about fitness. This quickly pointed me to bodybuilding and for better or worse a lot of the "bro-science". I made some progress but mostly in spite of the things I was doing (or at least for the reasons I thought I was doing them). The moment of glimmer in all of this was connecting with local powerlifters through some of the online bodybuilding communities. They invited me to join them for a few lifting sessions at their gym and that is when things really took off - this is now almost a decade ago.

Even after pouring over countless videos and articles online, linking up with people who could watch or listen to what I was doing and provide advice for me just 180'd things. I was finally understanding technique and training principles for me, learning how to recalibrate my nutrition to fuel my goals (in and outside of the gym), and I finally start to feel "like myself" and see progress that I'd been missing out on for years.

Through study, certification, and my own experiences I'm able to give you the "why it works" behind a lot of the bro-science I used to blindly follow; utilizing a science and evidence-based approach and help you weed out the bull. As time has gone on I've only continued to learn more and can't wait to translate all of this into helping you experience the changes and improvements you're after.

Coaching Philosophy & Way of Working

My goal is to be the guide to your fitness and health journey. This path looks different for each of us depending not only on our goals; but the dozens of factors and aspects of our lives that make each of us uniquely, well, us.

I don't do copy/paste programs - what works for one will not work for all. There are numerous fundamentals we can all leverage in some way, shape, or form; but how and how much will differ. A certain exercise, food, or mindset just might not work for you - so let's find and focus on what does work.

What I want for every person I work with is to help them make changes that will last. Yes, we can set a goal, reach it, then shake hands and part ways. Most often it's keeping what we've earned that's the toughest.

This means I'm here to teach you sustainable and realistic approaches to reaching your goals. Even if you're part of the 9% of American adults who set and accomplish a New Year's resolution - how many of us know someone (even ourselves) who end up having to repeat that goal a year later?

Yes, we could take an extreme approach to our nutrition and training to quickly reach some dream bodyweight or physique, but at what cost? We want to be healthy in body and mind - there's many dimensions to our health. We want to feel great about ourselves not just today; but everyday. We should feel good not just in an outfit but in our body. Let's get to "there" but do it in a way that you feel good along the way, keep that success for years to come, and feel like you're still living life!
